Hundreds of thousands of project managers understand why PMP Exam Prep by Rita Mulcahy, PMP, is a worldwide best-seller. Is it Rita's years of PMP exam preparation experience? The endless hours of ongoing research? The interviews with project managers who failed the exam, to identify gaps in their knowledge? Or is it the razor-sharp focus on making sure project managers do...more

Must read with PMBOK in order to have a user friendly understanding of project management concepts.

There are many books for learning project management or PMP. But this book definitely aims at passing exam. I had fair amount of knowledge to carry out projects well at my organisation. But passing PMP means giving PMI expected answers which one finds out upon giving first test after first round of learning. I had gone through the entire PMBOK and was scoring in the range of 50 to 60%. That's where I started looking for other preparation sources and I found this book. I'm writing this review hop...more

This was an excellent prep guide for the PMP exam. Following the recommended study plan described in the book enabled me to pass my PMP exam on the first attempt. I would highly recommend also getting the complete “PMP Exam Prep System”. That bundle includes the Hot Topics audio books which are a nice high-level review tool. But, most importantly, it also includes the PM FASTrack Exam Simulation Software. The Exam Simulation is a great exam prep tool that will let you know with confidence when y...more

Rita Mulcahy's book is why I passed my PMP exam. I read the obligatory PMBOK, and attended a very engaging and worthwhile bootcamp. But listening to Rita's latest edition of the PMP Exam Prep on my way to and from work for a month really ended up being the most effective presentation of the material. The PMBOK is dry and difficult to read through. This tries to really make the information appealing for the reader/listener. It was difficult to seek back and forth when I wanted to hear something o...more

I didn't have time to finish the book prior to taking the PMP exam nbut I did pass the exam the 1st time. I liked this book mch better than the Andy Crowe book. The book uses an understanding approach rather than a memorization approach. It includes tasks for the processes and the sequencing of the tasks. This is an important concept for the exam since many questions ask what should be done first or next. It also includes the material on the exam that's not covered in the PMBOK. I would highly r...more

Delightful. It is such a pleasant change to ready a study guide where the author has a sense of humor and fun. AND I passed the PMP exam!

Completely focussed on the exam, every single line is designed to fetch you an extra mark in the exam. The book also has the depth which is on par with the questions on the exam.
I read Head First PMP, but it was more like an introductory text, after reading this text I understood that there is more to PMP i.e. depth wise!
This is a good book but it is jargon diahorrea, it is like everything is put into this book and dumped.

This was the 3rd and final book I used to study for the PMP exam. I originally bought it to study years ago and was put off by the negative tone and how daunting they make the test seem. While it is a huge endeavor to undertake, it is doable.
I recommend this book to anyone planning to sit for the PMP. It is an excellent resource that touches on points that other books do not. I would not recommend using this book only or only reading it once. The sheer volume of information needed to take and pa...more

This book really helped me understand project management and prepare for the PMP exam. Of course the PMBOK is the foundational text and should be read, but this book is a lot more thorough and engaging. Mulcahy’s style is more conversational and she includes exercises through the book to drive concepts home. There is a quiz at the end of each chapter that is fairly difficult and a good gauge to see if you understood what you read. I am keeping my fingers crossed that I pass tomorrow but either w...more

I don't know any PMP certificate holder who did not come across this book. Definitely, it's a must-read book. For me, I studied this book three times for my PMP, PMI-RMP and PMI-SP certificates. The book is very helpful even if you are not targeting getting any of these certificates. It provides a very well explained approach for the project management discipline and provides a lot of examples, questions and study tips for the PMP exam.

Comprehensive overview for the PMP exam with many great tips and instruction. Each chapter also includes a chapter test. Exercises are also spread throughout the book. The book is comprehensive and discusses all the knowledge areas and process groups chronologically and how they relate to each other to paint a full project management picture. This would be perfect if it included a full practice test. This was recommended to me by a PMP.

Rita's PMP Exam Prep is a good second book (Head First PMP was a good first) for studying for the PMP exam. The exercises were good and really focused on helping you with the exam. I ran out of time before the exam so I skipped around a little to the areas I felt I was weakest in. I think it was a little more jargon (which you need also) than Head First so I'm glad I read the other one first to get the concepts.

I honestly think this was more valuable than the $900 class I paid for. Reading this book made the PMBOK concepts sort of make sense. I LOVED the tools of the trade. I wrote all over this book while I was studying. It is an absolute must-read for the PMP exam.
My exam is tomorrow and I'm hoping that this book will make the difference for me to get a passing grade.

I haven't written the exam yet, so not sure I can rate it fairly....it's a beast of a book and not exactly a light beach read and I'm not referring to the size of the book!
Generally, it's a good reference book.

while i didn't like the often-condescending tone, i think having read the book and taken the chapter quizzes will prove helpful when i take the exam. hopefully i pass it on the first time so i don't have to read it again!

Great book for prepping for the PMP exam. Highly recommended. I primarily used this book (not the PMBOK) to prep. Followed the suggestions, did the exercises, focused on learning processes (over memorization). Rita provides a blueprint on how to pass the exam, and it works!
This is an excellent book for understanding the basic topics that are tested in PMP exam. Although it is highly recommended for test takers to read PMBOK guide, this book provides a detailed project management implementation from test-takers' perspective which makes is a 'must' read.
A must read for PMP exam candidates.

Very comprehensive and thorough book about the Project Management topic. Many concepts that clarify what is described in the PMBOK. Very recommendable for anyone trying to get a PM certification.
